An 83-year-old man, Govindan, was cheated of Rs. 40 lakhs by his nephew, Srikanth, on the pretext of starting a jewelry store in Coimbatore and making him a partner in the business.
Coimbatore: In a distressing case of familial deceit, an 83-year-old resident of Kumarapalayam in Selvapuram, Perur Main Road, Coimbatore, named Govindan, who has lived in America for the past 50 years and visits his sister's house in Selvapuram annually, was swindled out of Rs. 40 lakhs by his nephew, Srikanth, aged 45. Srikanth had convinced his uncle Govindan about his plans to open a jewelry store in Coimbatore and offered him a share in the business. Trusting his nephew, Govindan handed over the sum recently. However, Srikanth neither opened the jewelry store as promised nor returned the money, effectively committing fraud.
Following the realization of the deceit, Govindan lodged a complaint at the Selvapuram police station. Acting on the complaint, Inspector Selvaraj registered a case and arrested Srikanth on February 12 for the fraudulent act. The incident has shed light on a harrowing betrayal within the family, leading to legal repercussions for the accused.
