The Kongu Global Forum has officially requested Akasa Air to initiate flights from Coimbatore, highlighting the city's significant contribution to Tamil Nadu's GDP and its potential for enhanced air connectivity.
Coimbatore: The Kongu Global Forum (KGF), representing leaders from various industrial sectors across Tamil Nadu's western districts, has formally requested Akasa Air's service commencement from Coimbatore airport, the second busiest in the state. Citing the city's robust industrial base and its pivotal role in the state's economy, the forum emphasized the urgent need for better air connectivity, especially in the wake of reduced flight operations by major carriers post-pandemic.
In January, 2024 the number of flights were further reduced by Indigo wide its network as more aircrafts were grounded and Coimbatore airport was one of the most affected airports by this reduction. Among all routes from Coimbatore airport, Coimbatore-Chennai, Coimbatore-
Bengaluru and Coimbatore-Hyderabad sectors are largely affected compared with other sectors.
Total flights on Coimbatore-Chennai sector is reduced to 6 A321s/A320s from January, 2024 onwards from daily 8-9 A321s/A320s operated during the summer schedule 2023.
Similarly, Coimbatore-Bengaluru sector is down to 4 ATRs in January, 2024 middle onwards from 3 daily A321s/A320s + 1 weekly A320 operated in summer schedule 2023.
Coimbatore-Hyderabad sector frequency is reduced to 2 A321s/A320s in January, 2024 onwards from daily 4 A321s/A320s in summer schedule 2023.
With Coimbatore airport's expansion on the horizon, KGF believes that Akasa Air's entry could significantly benefit the region's air travel infrastructure and support further economic growth.

KGF highlighted the recent decline in flights, particularly on key routes such as Coimbatore-Chennai, Coimbatore-Bengaluru, and Coimbatore-Hyderabad, due to aircraft shortages faced by other airlines. They proposed specific flight numbers based on city-pair traffic statistics, suggesting that Akasa Air could fill a critical gap in the market. Moreover, with the Tamil Nadu government's ongoing efforts to expand Coimbatore airport, the forum assured comprehensive promotional support for Akasa Air, leveraging its extensive network across industrial associations, educational institutions, and healthcare sectors to foster a successful launch.
