Coimbatore's Cyber Crime Division has recommended action under the Goondas Act against Sabari, a 23-year-old from Vadavalli, and others for extorting money by threatening individuals with false accusations of watching obscene content.
Coimbatore: Following a series of complaints to the Cyber Crime Division of the Coimbatore City Police, an investigation was launched into a gang that allegedly extorted money by accusing individuals of watching obscene content. The probe revealed that Sabari (23), from Vadavalli, along with 9 others, pretended to be cybercrime officers and extorted money by threatening to file cases for watching obscene content unless a sum was paid.
Subsequently, Sabari and his accomplices were arrested by the police. It was found that Sabari played a leading role in this extortion racket. Following these developments, the Cyber Crime Division recommended to the City Police Commissioner that action be taken against Sabari under the Goondas Act.
Acting on the recommendation, City Police Commissioner V. Balakrishnan ordered action under the Goondas Act against Sabari. A copy of the order was delivered to Sabari, who is currently detained, on Wednesday (Feb. 7). This move marks a significant step in the fight against extortion and cybercrime in Coimbatore.
