Jasmine Prices Remain High Due to Unabated Cold Weather in Coimbatore

Despite the onset of warmer weather, jasmine prices in Coimbatore have not decreased due to continuous cold weather conditions at night, affecting the flower's production and keeping prices elevated.

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore flower market sources jasmine, jasminum sambac, and mullai from regions like Ooty, Gobi, Sathyamangalam, Mettupalayam, Dindigul, and Nilakottai daily.

Traditionally, during the winter, these flowers experience reduced blooming, leading to a price surge. Over the past two months, jasmine prices reached up to Rs 2000 per kilogram. Currently, despite the reduction in cold weather and an increase in daytime temperatures, the night-time cold weather persists, causing a significant decrease in jasmine production and an increase in prices.

As of yesterday, jasmine was sold for Rs 1200 per kilogram, jasminum sambac for Rs 1000 per kilogram, and mullai for Rs 600 per kilogram. According to the Coimbatore Malarial Awareness Campaign, these three flowers typically flourish in warmer weather, with their blooming reducing in the cold season. Usually, production increases by January and February when the cold lessens. However, this time, the expected decrease in cold weather has not occurred, leading to less production and higher prices. The prices are expected to decrease by the end of the month if the weather conditions improve.
