Sudden Surge in Garlic Prices in Coimbatore

A significant drop in garlic supply to Coimbatore's MGR Wholesale Market from over 100 tons to just 40 has led to a steep price increase, with rates reaching up to Rs 450 per kilo in wholesale and Rs 540 in retail.

Coimbatore: In an unexpected market shift, garlic prices in Coimbatore have soared due to a sudden decrease in supply. Garlic cultivation in Tamil Nadu regions like the Nilgiris, Madurai, and Dindigul, along with imports from Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Gujarat, has traditionally met the local demand. However, the arrival of garlic at the MGR Wholesale Market on Mettupalayam Road, which used to receive over 100 tons, has now plummeted to about 40 tons.

This supply shortage has triggered a price hike, with the wholesale market selling garlic for as much as Rs 450 per kilo. The impact is more pronounced in the retail segment, where prices reached Rs 540 per kilo. This sudden increase has taken consumers by surprise, especially since prices were as low as Rs 274 per kilo in the recent past. The spike in garlic prices has caused concern among household consumers who are feeling the pinch of the unexpected rise.
