Transgender Inmate Attempts Suicide in Coimbatore Central Prison

Venba, a transgender woman from Musiri, Trichy district, attempted suicide in the Coimbatore Central Prison following a delay in her bail proceedings.


Coimbatore: Venba, a transgender woman hailing from Musiri in Trichy district, attempted suicide yesterday evening (Jan 16) in the Coimbatore Central Prison's women's ward.

She had been serving a life sentence since 8.7.2023 for a murder case. Frustrated over the delay in obtaining bail, Venba tried to hang herself using a saree in the prison restroom. She was subsequently rescued and is currently receiving treatment at Coimbatore Government Hospital. The police are investigating the incident to understand the circumstances leading to the suicide attempt.
