Coimbatore man Raghunath Erases Caste Name from G.D. Naidu Street Sign

Raghunath, a DMK member from Coimbatore's Race Course area, removed the caste name from the G.D. Naidu street sign, sparking debate.

Coimbatore: Raghunath, a prominent DMK member from the Race Course area in Coimbatore and a film producer known as Race Course Raghunath, has stirred controversy by erasing the caste name from the G.D. Naidu street sign in Ward 66 under the Coimbatore Municipal Corporation's Central Zone. This act has led to widespread discussion on social media.

Raghunath defended his action, stating that according to government orders, streets should not bear caste names. He explained that the original name of the street was G.D. Street, and the word 'Naidu' was added later. He emphasized his intention to promote equality, which led him to erase the caste-indicative word from the sign.

His actions have drawn criticism from BJP members, who have expressed their disapproval of the alteration. In response to the criticism, Raghunath asserted that he has not committed any wrongdoing and believes his actions were justified and in accordance with his principles of equality.

The incident has sparked a debate about the naming of streets and the reflection of caste identities in public spaces, highlighting the ongoing discussion around caste and equality in Indian society.
