Sri Ramakrishna Polytechnic College Students Celebrate Samaththuva Pongal with Enthusiasm

Students and faculty of Sri Ramakrishna Polytechnic College, near Thudiyalur, Coimbatore, enthusiastically celebrated Samaththuva Pongal with traditional activities and cultural performances.


Coimbatore: Students and faculty of Sri Ramakrishna Polytechnic College, located near Thudiyalur, Coimbatore, celebrated 'Samaththuva Pongal' today with great enthusiasm. The celebration included various traditional activities like cooking Pongal in new pots, grinding with the grinding stone, tug of war, Uri Adithal (breaking the pot), Silambam (traditional martial arts), playing the Parai (a traditional drum), and dancing.



The college premises were decorated with colorful rangoli and sugarcane was placed as a part of the celebration. The students prepared Pongal in new clay pots and offered it to the divine, chanting "Pongalo Pongal" as the rice boiled over, symbolizing abundance and prosperity.



In addition, cows were worshipped, and fruits were offered to them, showcasing the traditional reverence for cattle in Tamil culture, especially during the Pongal festival.



The event also featured various competitions and performances by students dressed in traditional attire. Activities included girls grinding with the grinding stone, rope pulling competitions, Uri Adithal, Silambam, slow cycling, playing the Parai, and other contests, adding to the festive spirit.



The highlight of the celebration was the students and teachers dancing to popular cinema songs, expressing their joy and adding a modern twist to the traditional festivities.



This celebration of Samaththuva Pongal at Sri Ramakrishna Polytechnic College is a testament to the institution's commitment to preserving and promoting cultural heritage, as well as fostering a sense of community and equality among students and staff.
