Amaravathi Dam Reaches Full Capacity, Excess Water Discharge Triggers Flood Alert in Udumalai

Excess water release from the overflowing Amaravathi Dam in Udumalai, Tirupur District, has prompted flood warnings for surrounding villages.

Coimbatore: The Amaravathi Dam, located near Udumalai in Tirupur District, has reached full capacity due to incessant rains in key catchment areas including Pambaaru, Maraiyur, and Kandhaloor. As a safety measure, authorities have opened the dam, releasing 1500 cubic feet of excess water into the river and main canals. This decision comes as continuous rainfall increases water inflow, raising concerns of further releases.

Villages along the banks, such as Kallapuram, Ruthra Palayam, Kolumam, Madathukulam, Kaniyur, and Karatholuvu, have been alerted to evacuate, with over 50 villages advised to move to safer areas. The dam currently holds 89.18 feet of water against its total capacity of 90 feet, with a water inflow rate of 1392 cubic feet per second.

Residents are urged to stay vigilant as the situation may evolve with ongoing rainfall. The Public Works Department has issued alerts and is closely monitoring the dam levels and the weather forecasts.
