Herd of Wild Elephants Create Panic in Thadagam on New Year's Day

A herd of eight wild elephants entered Thadagam area in Coimbatore on New Year's Day, causing widespread panic and damaging property.

Coimbatore: Residents of Thadagam, Coimbatore, experienced a frightening start to the New Year when a herd of eight wild elephants, including calves, ventured into the area around 11 PM last night. The elephants emerged from the surrounding forest areas of Thondamuthur, Perur, Thadagam, and Maangarai. Locals captured videos of these elephants uprooting plants along the streets.

This incident has renewed calls for preventive measures to keep elephants within the forest boundaries. Despite efforts by the Forest Department, such incidents of elephants straying into human settlements are recurring. The locals and farmers have been urging the department to dig trenches and conduct regular patrols to prevent elephants from entering the villages.

Recently, these elephants had also damaged ration supplies stored at a shop in Nanjundapuram. The continuous demands from villagers and farmers to take effective measures against such incidents highlight the growing human-elephant conflict in the region.
