GKNM Hospital's Pediatric Heart Surgery Collaboration with Mayo Clinic, Rochester, USA

GKNM Hospital in Coimbatore partners with Mayo Clinic, USA, through Children Heart Link, enhancing pediatric heart surgery. With specialized training and shared expertise, the collaboration has significantly improved care for children undergoing heart surgery in the region.

Coimbatore: In a significant stride towards enhancing pediatric cardiac care, GKNM Hospital in Coimbatore has strengthened its collaboration with the prestigious Mayo Clinic, Rochester, USA, through the support of Children Heart Link. This international partnership, aimed at promoting advanced open heart surgeries for children, saw a team of medical volunteers from Mayo Clinic visiting GKNM Hospital, marking a week of shared expertise and successful surgeries.

Since 2014, GKNM Hospital has been operating a specialized pediatric heart surgery unit, performing around 450 surgeries annually with a commendable operative mortality rate of about 1%. These surgeries are heavily subsidized, supported by various donors, and the hospital has been a proud partner of Children Heart Link, a Minnesota-based NGO, since February 2018. This collaboration is focused on enhancing intensive care for post-surgery pediatric patients, primarily through the training of ICU nurses by North American medical volunteers.

The recent visit by four Mayo Clinic volunteers - Dr. MiKel Nemergut, a pediatric cardiac anesthesiologist and intensivist; respiratory therapist Bri Miller; and ICU nurses Erinn Erickson and Kim Weiss - facilitated an invaluable exchange of knowledge and skills with the GKNM team. During their stay, GKNM successfully performed open heart surgeries on 11 children, all of whom had positive outcomes.

GKNM Hospital, under the leadership of CEO Dr. Ragupathy Veluswamy, is committed to establishing a center of excellence for treating congenital heart conditions in children. This initiative aims to serve the needs of children not just in Coimbatore but also in the surrounding districts.

Expressing gratitude, the GKNM administration acknowledged the contributions of Children's Heart Link and the Mayo Clinic volunteers for their invaluable knowledge-sharing, playing a crucial role in elevating the standard of pediatric cardiac care at the hospital.
