Substandard Road Construction in Coimbatore Leads to Memo for Three Officials: CCMC Commissioner Sivaguru

A fresh layer of tar had been laid on an 800-meter stretch, costing around ₹1.10 crores, without proper milling of the old surface, raising questions about the integrity of the work undertaken.

A stern memo has been issued to three municipal officials involved in road construction work in Coimbatore due to the substandard quality of the roads built. A fresh layer of tar had been laid on an 800-meter stretch, costing around ₹1.10 crores, without proper milling of the old surface, raising questions about the integrity of the work undertaken.

The issue caught the attention of the Municipal Commissioner, Sivaguru Prabhakaran, who personally visited the site to assess the quality of the work. His initial visit took place around 11:00 PM, where he spent an hour meticulously reviewing the construction parameters such as the length, breadth, and temperature of the tar used in construction.

Unsatisfied with the initial findings and the method of road laying, the commissioner revisited the site at 8:00 AM the following morning. He noted the absence of compactors rolling over the freshly laid bitumen and the stones not adhering to the tar properly, signifying a lack of standard procedures being followed.

In response to the unsatisfactory work, the commissioner has directed punitive measures against the contracting firm, Vishnu Infra, and issued memos to the assistant engineer, Mr. Barmaan Ali, assistant administrative engineer, Mr. Prabhakaran, and administrative engineer, Karuppasamy. They have been admonished for not ensuring the quality of the work and asked to rectify the errors noted during the commissioner’s inspection.
