Coimbatore needs four well-equipped railway stations - GM Southern Railways

Coimbatore's railway landscape to undergoe a major facelift as Southern Railways GM unveils transformative plans. The proposal includes station expansions, additional platforms, and advanced maintenance facilities, promising enhanced connectivity and efficiency.


*Coimbatore, October 15, 2023 -* In a pivotal move towards enhancing passenger convenience, the General Manager of Southern Railways has emphasized the urgent need to transform Coimbatore's railway stations. Addressing the media today, the GM highlighted the necessity of developing four well-equipped railway stations to cater to the burgeoning needs of commuters in the city.

*Key Points:*

1. Coimbatore Junction to Coimbatore Central: 



The GM proposed changing the name of Coimbatore Junction to Coimbatore Central, envisioning it as a central hub for commuters. This transformation comes hand-in-hand with the expansion plan that includes the addition of two more platforms, bringing the total to six, ensuring seamless movement of trains and passengers.

2. Coimbatore North Junction: 



Additionally, plans are underway to enhance Coimbatore North Junction, currently equipped with two platforms. The authorities are considering an expansion that could potentially add two more platforms, thus accommodating the increasing number of trains and passengers efficiently.

3. Coimbatore South Junction (Podanur): 



The Southern Railways GM emphasized the importance of developing Coimbatore South Junction, located in Podanur. With its existing five platforms, Podanur is set to become a vital transportation hub. Furthermore, the GM stressed the urgent need to establish comprehensive train maintenance facilities in Podanur, ensuring the smooth operation of services.

4. Coimbatore East Junction (Irugur): 



Coimbatore East Junction, situated in Irugur, is also slated for development. The plan includes expanding the station to accommodate two platforms, enhancing its capacity to serve the growing number of passengers in the eastern region of Coimbatore.

The GM, Southern Railways, asserted that these strategic developments are imperative to meet the rising demands of Coimbatore's populace.

Furthermore, he emphasized that renaming Podanur as Coimbatore South would not only signify a symbolic change but also encourage more passengers to utilize the station, fostering greater connectivity and accessibility for the city's residents.

The transformation of these stations signifies a significant step forward in the city's transportation sector, ensuring that Coimbatore's railway infrastructure aligns with the dynamic needs of its people. As the plans take shape, commuters can look forward to a more efficient and passenger-friendly rail network in the near future.
