24 body cameras have been provided to armed guards who escort prisoners to court and jail in Coimbatore.
Coimbatore: City Police Commissioner Balakrishnan has ordered 24 policemen to wear shoulder cameras on the policemen, following the allegations of inmates fighting with the guards while taking them to court and jail and trying to escape.

Armed guards escorting prison inmates, and vehicle-mounted camera footage can be monitored directly in the control room.
These cameras have been provided as a precautionary measure. 26,000 CCTV cameras have been installed in Coimbatore to prevent and monitor crime. 15,000 cameras are installed on the roads alone. Also, the work of installing 110 more cameras at an estimated cost of Rs.55 lakh is underway on behalf of the police department.
Criminals involved in chain snatching incidents have been tracked by CCTV and have been arrested several kilometers away.
There is not much cannabis cultivation in the city. However, the police are actively monitoring. As the police in the city must be on alert, a practice vehicle test was conducted as Orange Alert.
Teams have been mobilized to speed up vehicle checks across the city immediately after a large-scale robbery, theft, or crime. Two-wheeler theft has reduced in the city. And while old criminals are under surveillance, new criminals have recently taken up the bike theft business.
A special force has been formed to catch them. 60 people, including 2 assistant inspectors, have been given special training and are ready to speed up rescue operations immediately in case of disaster due to northeast monsoon.
