Protests Erupt for Restoration of Nanjarayan Pond: Demands for Eco-Park in Honor of Former TN CM Karunanidhi

Protests surge in from Secretariat in Chennai, urging restoration of Nanjarayan Pond and creation of an eco-park honoring late CM Karunanidhi. Biodiversity concerns and demand for wetland recovery fuel demonstrations.

Tirupur: A wave of protests has swept through Tamil Nadu, echoing a passionate demand for the restoration of water bodies and the creation of an eco-park dedicated to the memory of former Chief Minister Karunanidhi. Leading this movement is the Nanjarayan Pond Protection Association, with President Krishnasamy addressing the media today to shed light on the cause.

Nanjarayan Pond, the largest in Tirupur district, sprawls across 440 acres in the Oothukuli Vattam Sarkar Periyapalayam village of Tirupur. Fed by the Nallaar, a tributary of the Noyal River, this ancient pond boasts a remarkable legacy, spanning over 800 years. Its ecological significance is profound, serving as a sanctuary for 157 species of birds, 40 species of butterflies, 76 species of plants, 11 species of aquatic life, and 16 species of insects. Furthermore, it stands as a crucial breeding ground for various foreign bird species, adding to its biodiversity.

In a promising development, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu has officially recognized Nanjarayan Pond as the 17th bird sanctuary, drawing gratitude from the Nanjarayan Pond Protection Society for this crucial acknowledgment. However, concerns loom large over the unauthorized allocation of 8.90 acres of wetland to a private school during the previous regime. The society vehemently advocates for the recovery of this land, emphasizing its vital role in maintaining the ecological balance of the area.

Former Chief Minister Kalain M. Karunanidhi has announced his unwavering support for this cause. He is set to arrive in Chennai on behalf of the Nanjarayan Kulam Protection Association, actively participating in the protest scheduled to commence on the 12th in front of the Chief Secretariat. With determination in their voices, the protestors persist in their demand for the establishment of an eco-park, aiming to preserve the natural heritage of Nanjarayan Pond and honor the legacy of the revered Tamil Nadu leader.
