PAP water for Uppaaru dam - Farmers' protest called off

An agreement was reached in the talks held by the officials with the farmers who had announced a sit-in protest against the non-release of PAP water towards the Uppaaru dam.

Tirupur: The farmers' protest demanding water for Uppaaru dam has been called off.

In the Uppaaru irrigation area near Dharapuram in Tirupur district, 6,500 acres are irrigated directly and about 6,000 acres are indirectly irrigated.

In the PAP-4 zone, 20 per cent of the ayakattu lands, including wind mills, industries, educational institutions and highways roads, have been exempted from the scheme.

For the last five years, the Uppar dam has not been getting the water it deserves to be released in the PAP due to large-scale theft of water in zone 4-zone. Despite several protests to press for the farmers' demands, no solution has been found.

Following this, a solution was reached at a meeting held at the office of the Superintending Engineer, PAP, Pollachi. Accordingly, the Tirupur Collector has ordered that the areas where the lamp has been received from the PAP irrigation area in Dharapuram RTO-IV zone should be submitted as a report and the theft of water should be stopped.

But even after four months, no action has been taken.

Following this, Uppaaru irrigation farmers gathered at the Dharapuram RTO office to protest.

Later in the discussions held by the agricultural copies and RTO Senthil Arasan Inspector Manikandan and the PAP officials, it was stated that within 15 days, the PAP would prevent water theft in zone IV along with the authorities. RTO Senthil Arasan also assured to submit a report to the Collector within 15 days about the exempted irrigated areas.

Following this, the farmers dispersed. As a result, the excitement stopped for about three hours.
