Tamil Nadu ranks second in India's textile sector. The central government of India announced the establishment of a textile park in five BJP-ruled states. However, Gandhi stated that a textile park has been announced for Tamil Nadu as a result of the chief minister's efforts.

Coimbatore: Tamil Nadu Handlooms & Textiles Minister K Gandhi inaugurated the rebuilt handloom and co-optex stores in Coimbatore's Saibaba Colony area.

Vanathi Srinivasan, Coimbatore South MLA, and District Collector Kranthikumar Pati were also present on the occasion.

Speaking to reporters later, Gandhi said:

In spite of giving unprecedented importance to handloom development in the last 1.5 years, we are implementing various schemes for the betterment of weavers.

On the Chief Minister's directives, we are modernising handloom and co-optex outlets across Tamil Nadu. We have now developed 500 new designs through Bengaluru.

When the DMK came to power, the handloom sector was incurring a loss of Rs 9 crore. At present, the handloom sector is making a sale of about Rs 20 crore. The outlets were modernised at a cost of Rs.10 crore.

We are constantly making efforts for the betterment of the clothes and weavers that people love.

For the first time tomorrow, we are going to start a co-operative society for the people of Thoda in Ooty. So that we can directly buy and sell their products.

The weavers have been weaving with the family amidst difficulties. After four years , last year,a 10 percent wage hike was granted last year. This year too, a 10 per cent hike has been given.

At present, there are only six of the 12 national textile mills. Tamil Nadu ranks second in the textile sector in India. The textile park announced by the central government in India was announced for 5 BJP-ruled states.

However, due to the efforts of the Chief Minister, a textile park has been announced for Tamil Nadu as well.

Speaking further, Vanathi Srinivasan said that the policy decision taken by the cabinet on the issue of national textiles will be published.
