Bagan dies after being attacked by pet elephant at Mudumalai foster elephant camp

In a tragic incident, a pet elephant named Masini who was being reared in an elephant-rearing camp near Mudumalai in the Nilgiris district, suddenly attacked and killed Balan who was working as a bagan.


The Nilgiris: Balan, the 'bagan' died after being attacked by a pet elephant at the Mudumalai elephant camp.

There are 28 elephants that are being taken care of in the Mudumalai elephant-rearing camp, in Nilgiris district. Elephant calves are separated from mother elephants that attack and kill humans, and are brought to this camp and reared.

In 2013, the Masini elephant which was brought to the camp after being separated from its mother in 2006, and was handed over to Samayapuram Mariamman temple in Trichy.

After being in the temple for six years, the Masini elephant attacked and killed a bagan named Gajendran in 2019.

Following this, the elephant was brought back to the Mudumalai rearing camp and was being cared for.

The elephant, which is currently at Abhayaranyam camp suddenly attacked Balan this morning when he was taking the elephant away after giving him food.

Balan, who was seriously injured in the attack succumbed to his injuries while being taken to the Gudalur Government Hospital. The sudden attack of a pet elephant resulting in the death of a bagan has caused a lot of grief in the area.
