Coimbatore : On Vishu Day, the Malayalam new year, special pujas were performed at the Siddhapudur Ayyappa temple.

In the same way that people in Kerala celebrate the ancient Tamil festival of Deepavali by bursting crackers, it is customary to welcome in the Malayalam New Year with firecrackers.

They also prepare their puja room the night before by decorating it with fruits and flowers and keeping vegetables, millets, and decorations on ready.

The children in the house are brought with their eyes closed and made to have darshan as if they were getting up first to see the decorated pooja room, and in the new year, it is usual to present fruits to make life pleasant and to have a lot of good fortune in life.

Similarly, Malayalam-speaking residents of Coimbatore would rejoice with the arrival of the Malayalam new year without deviating from tradition.

The famous Siddhapudur temple in Coimbatore was decked with flowers for this celebration.

Kondrai flowers (Golden shower) were used to make special decorations for the presiding deity Ayyappa Swamy.

All devotees who visited the temple were given coins to worship in front of the idols by the temple priests.
