Coimbatore jewellers call for bandh on Thursday

The jewellers in Coimbatore district have called for a bandh on Thursday to protest against the new pan number rule. The Coimbatore jewellers will observe the bandh a day after an all India bandh being organized by jewellers on Wednesday.

The central government recently made it mandatory that pan number should be quoted for any jewellery purchase above Rs 2 lakh.

"In India only 10% of the citizens have a pan card, and 60% of the population are agriculturists," said K Krishnamurthy, president of the Coimbatore Jewellers Association.

The jewellers in the district said they had already lost 30% of their business since the rule came into force on January 1.
