Coimbatore likely to be recognized as district with least leprosy cases

The chances for Coimbatore to be recognised and awarded by the Central Leprosy Division are high, with the verification process and substantiation still in progress.

Coimbatore: Coimbatore has been listed as the district with the least number of leprosy cases in Tamil Nadu.

The chances for Coimbatore to be recognised for the same and awarded by the Central Leprosy Division are high. The verification process and the substantiation are still in progress.

In this regard, Dr. P Sivakumari, Deputy Director of Medical Services (Leprosy) spoke to SimpliCity.

"Deformity cases have not been reported in the last five years which is an effective roadmap in the eradication process of this chronic disease.

An overall view shows that Coimbatore District holds the least number of deformity cases in comparison to other districts of the state. By 2025, the Ministry of Health envisions making India a leprosy-free country.

Moving further with the vision, the National Leprosy Eradication Programme (NLEP) has initiated various measures to monitor and treat leprosy at its earliest stage. These include free diagnosis and treatment offered by public health facilities."

"To be enlisted in the category the official team will take into consideration the years 2017-2021, wherein no case of leprosy has been reported but this doesn't assure that no more cases will raise, and also in 2022 just one leprosy case was reported in the district.

Therefore more than 750 volunteers including students and doctors were involved in activities such as taking up door-to-door surveys and other welfare initiatives under NLEP," explained Dr. P Sivakumari.
