Coimbatore: The Microsurgery Lab in the department of Plastic Surgery at Ganga Hospital today reached the landmark of having trained 1500 Surgeons from 68 countries including developed nations like the USA and UK and 142 cities across India.
The Plastic, Hand & Reconstructive Microsurgery Department of Ganga Hospital, Director Dr S. Raja Sabapathy said that “Microvascular Surgery involves joining of blood vessels as small as 1.0mm in diameter.
“The surgeons are trained to put in 4 to 5 sutures in the small 1.0mm vessel. To teach this fine art, Ganga Hospital established the Microsurgery Laboratory in the year 2000. Over a period of one week the Surgeons are taught the technique in simulated operation theatre conditions” Dr. Raja Sabapathy said.
“The Micro Lab at Ganga Hospital has been considered as one of the best in the world and is becoming increasingly popular. That the candidates have come from 68 countries and 142 cities of India is a pride for Ganga Hospital and also the city of Coimbatore” he added.
“The lab attracts not only people from developing nations but is also popular in advanced nations. Of the 1500 trainees, 164 surgeons have come from UK and 82 surgeons have come from the USA”.
“The Microsurgery Laboratory at present contains 4 microscopes and at any one time, 4 people can do the course. It took about 18 years to reach the first 1000 trainees landmark and the next 500 has been reached in a span of 5 years with 2 years of it being Covid-19-affected years” Dr Raja Sabapathy noted.
“This shows the increased popularity and effectiveness of the course. Out of the 4 people who took this landmark course, 3 of them are from New Delhi, 2 from All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, 1 from Dr RML Hospital, New Delhi and 1 from Bhopal’ he said and added.
“In addition to the people visiting for the course, the hospital has been a destination for teaching and training and a good 2800 surgeons from 70 countries have visited the hospital”.
“The hospital also offers short-term and long-term fellowships and has revolutionised the way the trauma reconstructive surgery is done in many developing nations by training people,” he said
