Five of a family, involved in theft cases in the city arrested, 40 sovereigns of jewellery recovered

Coimbatore City Police have arrested five members of the same family who were involved in thefts at various places in Coimbatore and seized 40 sovereigns of gold ornaments from them.



Coimbatore: On the orders of Coimbatore City Police Commissioner Balakrishnan, a special team headed by Assistant Commissioner of Police, R.S. Puram Ravikumar, was formed to nab the culprits involved in thefts in places where people gather in large numbers such as railway stations, bus stands, temple festivals and buses.







The police arrested five persons Diwakar (26), Kanhaiya (30), Parvathy (67), Muthamma (23) and Geetha (24), all residents of Thirumalaiyampalayam, who were involved in thefts at various places in the city over the months.



According to Police, they all belong to the same family and functioned as a gang. A total of 13 cases have been registered against the five at various police stations in the city.

Coimbatore Deputy Commissioner of Police Sandeesh congratulated the Assistant Commissioner of Police, R.S. Puram, Ravikumar, B1 Bazaar Police Station, Sub-Inspector Chinnadurai, Sub-Inspector, B2 R.S. Puram Police Station, Special Sub-Inspectors Marimuthu, Uma and Head Constables Karthik Bhupathi for the breakthrough arrests.

The Police Commissioner warned that the public should be very careful while travelling in buses and in public places.

Similarly, special squads have been formed at Race Course and Saibaba Colony police stations to prevent theft incidents.

The Commissioner also warned that Goondas Act will be invoked against those who are involved in such crimes.



He said that this special squad police will merge with the public to catch those involved in such crimes.

The Commissioner said that two to three teams will be formed to monitor the consecration ceremony of Saibaba temple and an additional 36 cameras will be installed to monitor the function as against the existing 40 cameras.

“Those involved in a series of chain snatching incidents are being constantly monitored and arrested” the commissioner said.

“Talks will be initiated with the Government to set up CCTV cameras in buses to prevent crimes“, said Deputy Commissioner of Police Sandesh.
