Public take pledge at Grama Sabha Meetings to make Coimbatore district drug-free

The public participated in large numbers in the Grama Sabha Meetings held on the occasion of Republic Day in Coimbatore district. 231 villages under 118 panchayats have been declared drug-free and signboards have been put up declaring them as drug-free.


Coimbatore: The public that turned out in large numbers at various villages across Coimbatore district where Grama Sabha Meetings were held on the occasion of India's 74th Republic Day, took a pledge to make Coimbatore district drug-free.



In all the villages, resolutions were passed in collaboration with the police by Panchayat Presidents to make Coimbatore district free of drug abuse.



231 villages under 118 panchayats have been declared drug-free and signboards have been put up declaring them as drug-free.



The Coimbatore District Superintendent of Police, V Badrinarayanan stated, "As part of the initiative against drugs, 1,532 cases were registered against 1821 ganja and drug offenders last year and 20.14 thousand kg of ganja and narcotics and 180 vehicles involved in it were seized.



The bank accounts of 184 ganja and drug offenders have been frozen. Action has been taken against 9 persons under the Goondas Act.

Arrests have been made against 391 persons and 10 persons have been arrested for violating the probation bond despite obtaining probation bonds.

Thus far, 63 cases have been registered against 73 ganja and drug offenders and 219.035 kg of ganja and narcotics and 5 vehicles involved in drug peddling have been seized.

The bank accounts of 68 ganja offenders have also been frozen. Arrests have been taken against 22 persons and 1 person has been arrested for violating the probation bond even after obtaining probation bond."

"At present, steps are being taken seriously to completely eradicate the use of cannabis chocolates and narcotic pills which are spoiling the lives of youth.

For this purpose, 8 special squads have been formed in the Headquarters and in each Police Sub-Division, to eradicate drugs with intensive monitoring.

Awareness against ganja and drugs is being created in all police stations on a daily basis for school, college students and general public.

The public should not hesitate to inform the police if they are involved in the sale of drugs or act against law and order.
