A sub-inspector of police has been arrested by the Special Cell for his alleged involvement in the sale of ganja in Coimbatore.
Coimbatore: The Special Task Force (STF) police arrested a person involved in the sale of ganja near Sanganur junction in Coimbatore and seized 8 kg of ganja from him.
The Special Cell police received information that ganja was being sold at roots flyover near Sanganoor junction in Coimbatore. Acting on a tip-off, a police team led by Rathinapuri police inspector Ramesh Khanna visited the area and conducted a search.
At that time, a suspect on a two-wheeler was caught and interrogated. On checking the two-wheeler in which he was travelling, it was found that there were ganja packets.
He was later taken to the police station and interrogated by Chandrababu, a native of Karamadai. It was found that he had taken a room in Vellalore and was staying there and was illegally smuggling ganja from Andhra Pradesh to Coimbatore and supplying it to small traders.
Police investigations revealed that Chandrababu had also sold ganja in small packets to school, college students and construction labourers. Police seized 8 kg of 200 grams of ganja, a two-wheeler and Rs 42,400 in cash from him. The police also took a list of Chandrababu's associates and searched for them.
Mahendran, Manickam, Mahesh and others have been arrested in connection with the case. Among those arrested, Mahendran worked as sub-inspector at the Rathinapuri police station. He is currently working in Erode Cyber Crime. On questioning Chandrababu, it was revealed that Mahendran had helped ganja dealers to circulate ganja.
He also spoke to ganja dealers on the phone. Mahendran has behaved as if he did not know how to sell and supply ganja. Based on this, Mahendran was arrested by the Special Cell police who went to Erode and has been sent to jail.
Police are trying to nab Jaleel, Jalil, Pandi, Riyaz Khan, Murugan, Siva, Murugesan and Pandi in connection with the case. An officer from the police department who was supposed to stop the circulation of ganja has been arrested for allegedly conniving with the sale of ganja.
