Elephants break into pump sets in farm near Perur in Coimbatore

Farmers in Theethipalayam area near Perur have suffered losses to the tune of lakhs of rupees due to the breach and damage to the borewell irrigation equipment and drip irrigation equipment on the agricultural land.


Coimbatore: A large number of wild animals, including elephants, live in the Western Ghats region of Coimbatore district. There have been frequent incidents of these elephants entering residential areas and farmlands along the hills in search of food and damaging crops.

Natarajan owns a farm on the way to Ayyasamy temple in Theethipalayam village near Perur in Coimbatore district.



A herd of 12 elephants entered natarajan's garden early this morning and not only broke the equipment in the two borewells, but also the drops that had been poured into the tomato crop there.



Similarly, it has grazed and left half an acre of fodder grass on land owned by the Nagar Peetham Trust in its vicinity.

The farmers have demanded that the forest department should take immediate steps to prevent wild animals, including wild elephants, from entering the agricultural fields.
