Coimbatore: The construction of a new drinking water supply scheme for Tirupur Corporation at a cost of rs 840 crore is in progress.
Water from Mettupalayam Bhavani river is being supplied to the people of 33 wards under Mettupalayam Municipality in Coimbatore District.
At present, the construction of a new water supply scheme for Tirupur Corporation at a cost of about Rs.840 crore is in progress near the site of drawing water to Mettupalayam Municipality in the Saamanna water House area.
While such work is going on, the authorities tried to divert the river by using boulders across the river to draw more water from the Bhavani river for the project.
They alleged that the Tirupur Corporation officials were involved in these activities without obtaining any permission for the same, the Mettupalayam municipality, which has been supplying drinking water to the people of Mettupalayam for the past 60 years, is facing problems in drawing water and the water level has come down.
In this case, when the water supply was examined, it was found that the river had been diverted.
The AIADMK councillors of Mettupalayam, who came to know about this, condemned the Tirupur Corporation officials.

They also protested against the Mettupalayam municipal commissioner's failure to monitor the incident and staged a protest by entering the Bhavani river at the place where drinking water was drawn to the Tirupur Corporation.

He also condemned the action of the Tirupur Corporation officials who are trying to divert the Bhavani river.

The councillors raised slogans alleging that the municipal commissioner was acting without any concern for the drinking water supply of the public.
Mettupalayam municipality president Mehari Baba Parvin and police rushed to the spot and inspected the area.
She then immediately spoke to the Tirupur Corporation officials and said that the river should not be diverted immediately. A JCB machine was immediately called in and Tirupur Corporation officials removed the pile of stones set up in the Bhavani river. Following this, the protestors dispersed from there.
