Residents of Sri Bharathi Nagar near PN Palayam petition collector to provide basic amenities and build elephant-proof trenches

Demanding to extend regular bus services, roads and street lights, the residents of Sri Bharathi Nagar under Gudalur municipality near Periyanaickenpalayam, have petitioned the District collector Sameeran.


Coimbatore: More than 450 families live in Sri Bharathi Nagar area of Gudalur municipality near Periyanaickenpalayam in Coimbatore district. A large number of families in the area are living below the poverty line.



The people living in the area have been allotted land for the construction of houses on behalf of the government and pattas have been issued for the same.

Following this, the people of the area have been living after erecting tenements with mud walls.

Suffering without basic amenities such as electric lights, and tar roads, the residents also suffer from wild life incursion and constant movement of wild animals like elephants, bears and wild boars.

Moreover, as elephants which enter their neighborhood have damaged crops, houses and farmlands, due to which the people are living in fear, they said.

In a recent incident on January 13, two elephants, which entered the area damaged the houses of Sundaravel and Deivanai.

They complained to the Forest department officials but in vain.

Since even buses passing through the area are not plying after 5 pm due to the threat of wildlife, they say that there is a danger to life and people are afraid to even to go to work.

Putting forth demands in the their petition the residents have urged the collector to provide basic amenities like street lights and tar roads immediately.

The petitions also demand that as a safety measure to prevent elephants from entering the residential area, trenches should be constructed solar fencing should be provided.

The demands also included, that the bus services should be resumed from Periyanaickenpalayam at about 7.30 pm to Sri Bharathi Nagar area.

“The government should take steps to remove the unprotected mud walled houses and construct concrete houses” the residents demanded.
