Seven tonnes of sugarcane, turmeric and jaggery exported to Sharjah by air for Pongal festivities

Seven tonnes of sugarcane, turmeric and jaggery have been exported from Coimbatore to Sharjah for the Pongal festival in the last five days alone.


Coimbatore: Pongal is celebrated on the first Tamil month of Thai by Tamils not only in Tamil Nadu but all over the world. Pongal, sugarcane, turmeric are the main Pongal items which are offered to the Sun God.

In view of the Pongal festival, this year, goods including sugarcane, jaggery and turmeric were exported by air from Coimbatore to Sharjah.

In the last five days alone, seven tonnes of sugarcane and turmeric, jiggery and banana leaves have been exported to Sharjah from Coimbatore by air.

When contacted, Coimbatore airport officials said that a large quantity of sugarcane, turmeric, banana leaf, jaggery and other items have been booked and sent by air to Sharjah on the occasion of Pongal festival.

The airport official also said that a total of 15 tonnes of cargo has been shipped in the last 5 days. This includes five tonnes of sugarcane and two tonnes of jaggery, turmeric and banana leaves.

“The consignment, which was brought to Coimbatore from Madurai, Theni, Nilakottai and other places, was airlifted to Sharjah” he added.
