Coimbatore Railway Activists and users demand reintroduction of train services to southern districts

Accordingly, Railway activists have urged the Railway authorities to extend the services of trains running from Coimbatore to Tenkasi, Madurai, Dindigul, Rameswaram and Thoothukudi districts.

Coimbatore: The Southern Railway has announced that special trains will be operated from Coimbatore to Dindigul from January 13 to January 18 in view of the Pongal festival and to clear the festival rush.

However, the train passengers have been demanding the resumption of the vital train services of five trains which were running from Coimbatore to the southern districts via Palani but suspended in recent years.

Accordingly, they have urged the Railway authorities to resume the services of trains running from Coimbatore to Tenkasi, Madurai, Dindigul, Rameswaram and Thoothukudi districts.

The weekly train service from Coimbatore to Tenkasi and Tirunelveli was started in 2022. The service was patronised by 95% of the passengers. Steps should be taken to resume this train service as a tri-weekly service.

The daily train service from Coimbatore to Madurai was started on September 30, 2018. This service should be extended up to Thoothukudi with AC chair car facilities, and pre booking facilities just like intercity express.

The train, which was running from Coimbatore to Dindigul, connected the two major routes of Southern railway viz., Coimbatore-Thiruvananthapuram, Mangaluru via Chennai, Madurai-Kanyakumari, Rameswaram, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi and Tiruchendur via Chennai.

Steps should be taken to run this train service on a daily basis in the interest of the train passengers of Coimbatore.

Railway users have also demanded that trains from Coimbatore to Thoothukudi and Rameswaram via Palani should be resumed at least from this year.
