Police arrest culprit in the murder of elderly woman near Sirumugai

Police arrested a youth named Vasanthakumar, who murdered an elderly woman who was alone in her house near Sirumugai and robbed her of her jewellery.


Coimbatore: Murugaiyan (63), a native of Jadayampalayam near Sirumugai in Coimbatore district. He and his wife Saroja (59) lived alone.

On December 21, an unidentified person who entered the house slit the throat of the elderly woman Saroja, and looted gold ornaments from the cupboard of the house.

Following which Sirumugai police have registered a case and took up investigation.

On the orders of district SP Badrinarayanan, five special teams led by Mettupalayam Range Deputy Superintendent of Police Balaji were formed to nab the culprit involved in the murder.

The CCTV footages in the area were scrutinized and the police recorded the pictures of the suspects. Following this, when the Special team conducted a vehicle check in the South Tirupati junction, a youth on a two-wheeler was stopped and interrogated.

He was then brought to the police station and interrogated, following which the suspect Vasanthakumar accepted committing the crime. The police seized the stolen jewels from him.

Later, he was produced in court and remanded in custody.
