Young elopers end lives by suicide in Tirupur

In a tragic incident, a 20-year old youth and 16-year old girl from Madurai who had eloped and married, and staying in a rented house in Tirupur, ended their lives by consuming poison as well as hanging themselves to death. They left behind a letter saying that they were not allowed to live as per their wishes.

Tiruppur: Mari (20), a native of Thirumangalam in Madurai district reportedly fell in love with a 16-year-old girl from the same locality and married her. It is reported that since both were cousins, their love affair came to light in their house and their relatives separated them.

Due to opposition from their relatives, the two eloped and left Madurai for Tirupur on December 5 to live as a couple as per their wishes. The duo is said to have rented a house in Kadukkar Thottam area in Tirupur and lived there. The two also reportedly worked for a living in a nearby construction site.

Meanwhile the minor girl's parents lodged a missing complaint with the police station at Thirumangalam in Madurai and her relative too is said to have called her on the phone to persuade her to return to Madurai. Fearing that their relatives would separate them again, the two consumed poison on Tuesday night and also hung themselves. When their house door remained closed on Wednesday morning, the owner of the house broke into the house to find both dead.

The Nallur police, who reached the spot, recovered the bodies and sent them to the Tirupur District Government Headquarters Hospital and Medical College for post-mortem. Following this, the police have also recovered a letter written by them, in the house. The letter read thus: "Both of us came to Tirupur to live as per our wishes. Some people are responsible for this decision of ours. We wanted to live for 100 years, but we had no choice but to take this decision."

The police have registered a case and are investigating the suicides.
