Female elephant dies after being hit by speeding Truck on NH near Bandipur

In a tragic accident a 30-year-old elephant was killed when a truck heading towards Mysore hit the pachyderm on the Gudalur - Mysore stretch of the National Highway near Bandipur, late last night.


The Nilgiris: The Mudumalai Tiger Reserve in the Nilgiris district and the adjoining Bandipur Tiger Reserve are part of the coniguous forests of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

The Gudalur - Mysore National Highway has been a life line of the hllly areas which connnect the neighbouring states of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. As it is a busy highway, thousands of vehicles ply on this national highway every day.

Heavy vehicles going to Kerala - Karnataka in particular are using this road extensively.



In the meantime, the truck with Coimbatore registration number was on its way to Mysore via Gudalur from Kerala last night when it hit a 30-year-old cow elephant which was trying to cross the road. The accident happened in Bandipur tiger reserve areas. The cow elephant, which was criticallly njured died on the spot.

Bandipur forest department officials, who rushed to the spot on receiving information, detained the truck and registered a case under the Wild Life Proetction act. The elephant carcass was removed from the spot and sent for post-mortem.

In view of the movement of wild animals moving across the roads and along the roadsides on Mudumalai and adjoining Bandipur National Highway stretches it had been advised that vehicles plying on this road should be operated only at a minimum speed, but motorists often threw cuation to the winds.

An investigation is underway to ascertain the circumstances ,which led to the death of the she elephant after being hit by a truck in a road which instersect a Tiger Reserve.
