Brick Kiln Owners' association lays siege to Thadagam police station in Coimbatore

A group of brick manufacturers staged a sit-in protest at the Thadagam police station in Coimbatore alleging that a private organisation was spreading misinformation about the sale of land belonging to brick kilns.

Coimbatore: More than 200 brick kilns were functioning in Chinna Thadagam, Veerapandi, Nanjundapuram and Pannimadai areas of Coimbatore district. There were thousands of workers working in them.

Due to continuous ravaging of land resources and digging illegally way beyond the permitted levels, brick kilns have been banned to function by Pollution Control Board and the Green Tribunal. SimpliCity had highlighted the reckless and illegal mining of red sand several times in Thadagam area.

In this situation, a few people who were running brick kilns earlier are trying to sell their land in which they were running brick kilns and move away.

A few days ago, a notice in the name of a Chennai-based private organisation was sent to a few people from Thadagam. It is learnt that it has been mentioned that no one should buy these places as the NGT case is going on.

More than 100 members of the Brick Manufacturers Association, led by its president GEM Palanisamy, gheraoed the Thadagam police station and lodged a complaint.

According to the complaint, the letter received through “a private organisation is misleading the public by making false allegations.

We need to find out who they are and take appropriate action against them.”

In this situation, Thadagam sub-inspector Arumuga Nayar said that appropriate action would be taken in this regard and all those involved in the siege dispersed. This led to a tense situation there for some time.
