Doctors warn public to be cautious as 'Madras Eye' breaks out in Coimbatore

While 'Madras Eye' cases were being reported in various districts of Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, doctors in Coimbatore have now advised the public to be on alert as it is spreading in Coimbatore.

Coimbatore: Conjunctivitis, popularly known as 'Madras Eye,' has been detected in various districts across Tamil Nadu for the last few days. At present, Coimbatore is also witnessing a large number of 'Madras Eye' cases.

The eye infection is easily transmitted from one person to another due to the secretion from the eyes. About 20 people have been diagnosed with 'Madras Eye' at the Coimbatore Government Hospital, after tests were conducted on people who had gone to the hospital with symptoms of fever. Doctors in the city have cautioned the public to be vigilant and cautious.

Dr. Nirmala, Dean of Coimbatore Government Hospital said, "Madras Eye generally spreads rapidly from one person to another. Moreover, being infected with Madras Eye can lead to irritation in the eyes, watery eyes, redness of the eyes, discharge of impurities and excessive irritation. Although it is a minor eye infection, you need to go to the doctor properly and get treated. On the contrary, you should avoid using turmeric and eye drops without a doctor's prescription. Antibiotics prescribed by an ophthalmologist should be used only with the eye drops.

Moreover, using the possessions of the infected person can easily be the cause for the spread to another person. Therefore, it is important to isolate the patients. It is enough for patients to wash their eyes and hands frequently. People suffering from the disease can avoid going to public places and use eyeglasses until they recover."
