SACON to host 'Salim Ali Trophy Competition for Nature Awareness' on Nov. 20 in Coimbatore

The competition will be held at the G D Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Coimbatore from 9 am to 1 pm for school students in Coimbatore. One unique competition is the 'Bird Watching or Spot the Bird' competition to identify the young bird watcher of the year. Broad topics for this year's event will cover 'Conservation of Wetlands and Water Bodies.'



Coimbatore: The 'Salim Ali Trophy Competition for Nature Awareness' will be conducted by SACON on Sunday, November 20 at G D Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Coimbatore from 9 am to 1 pm.

Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History (SACON), Research Centre of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (Govt. of India) has been conducting the 'Salim Ali Trophy Nature Competitions' for more than two decades. Over this period of time, the event has captured the imagination of students in Coimbatore schools and nearby districts.

Every year, nearly 2000 students from about 50 schools participate in various categories of competitions such as elocution, essay writing, poetry, story writing (both in English and Tamil), painting and pencil drawings, and nature quiz.

One unique competition in this event is the 'Bird Watching or Spot the Bird' competition to identify the young bird watcher of the year. Broad topics for this year's event will cover 'Conservation of Wetlands and Water Bodies.' However, the actual topics of competitions will be given only on the spot to test the spontaneity, real knowledge and skill of the student as opposed to the trained for prepared competitions.

First three positions in each of the competition will fetch points for the school and the school with the highest tally will become the Champion of the Year. 10 prominent schools in Coimbatore have claimed the trophy thus far.
