TN Govt. approves inclusion of all levels of employees working in newspapers and television channels in Press Welfare Board

In a meeting held at the Secretariat on Wednesday, it was decided to include all employees who work in newspapers and television channels into the Press Welfare Board. The TN Govt. has informed that its implementation will start soon through online mode.

Chennai: A few days ago, a form for joining the Press Welfare Board was released which mentioned that only those who have a Government accreditation card, Press accreditation card or a Government free bus pass can join the Board as a member.

Due to this condition, 90 percent of journalists could not become members of the Press Welfare Board. The Association of Journalists for Change also pointed out that mostly only media bosses and those in high positions in the Press houses can join as members of the Board. Hence, the Association also requested the Government to change the rules so that all journalists working in various categories, irrespective of whether they are in print, visual or digital, are included as members.

In this context, the Press Welfare Board meeting held in Chennai discussed the inclusion of all journalists as members of the Board. Senior journalists who are members of the Board had put forward this demand. Following this, M P Swaminathan, the Minister for Information and Chairman of the Journalists Welfare Board assured the members that steps would be taken to include all journalists as members of the Board.

Accordingly, the Association insisted that the revised rule for joining the Board as members should be issued at the earliest. Following this, the Public Relations Department held a meeting of the Press Welfare Board under the Chairmanship of the Information Minister, Swaminathan at the Secretariat.

In this meeting, orders were issued to set up a Press Welfare Board to protect the welfare of journalists and to constitute a Committee of The Press Welfare Board to provide welfare assistance.

Accordingly, in the third meeting of the Press Welfare Committee, most importantly, the inclusion of the new members of the Welfare Board was discussed. A few days ago, the notification regarding the membership of the Press Welfare Board had announced that only a journalist who possesses a Government-approved identity card will be included.

In this context, it has now been approved to include all levels of employees in the Press Welfare Board to enable them to issue membership ID cards to all levels of employees working in newspapers and television channels.

With this, only 10 people can join an institution as a member of the Welfare Board. A decision has been taken to include in the Press Welfare Board employees who are presently working in the Institutes, including journalists, cinematographers, editors, assistant editors, audio engineers, etc. An official announcement in this regard is also expected to be made in a day or two.
