Sanitation workers continue strike in Coimbatore; Garbage piling up across city

The work of clearing the accumulated garbage in Coimbatore city has been delayed with contract sanitation workers continuing their strike to press for various demands, including a pay hike, permanent jobs, etc.



Coimbatore: Contract sanitation workers in Coimbatore Corporation area have been on a strike for several days demanding higher wages and permanent jobs.



Several petitions were also submitted to the Coimbatore District Collector, G S Sameeran and the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation Commissioner, M Prathap in this regard.

In spite of the district administration assuring that a resolution in this regard would be passed at the Municipal Council Meeting, the striking contract workers were dissatisfied with the fact that the decision taken on the wage hike of the safai karamcharis was superficial at the meeting held a few days ago. Hence, the contract safai karamcharis have re-started their strike from Tuesday.



Owing to the indefinite strike, garbage has accumulated across Coimbatore city. With Diwali being celebrated with great fervour on Monday, piles of firework boxes, charred fireworks, sweet boxes, etc., were lying unattended at various places.



At present, the work of clearing the garbage is progressing slowly since only the permanent sanitation workers of the Coimbatore Corporation are engaged in the work.
