Father tries to set himself on fire at Podanur police station in Coimbatore protesting against son's arrest

He was protesting against his 16-year-old son's arrest three days ago for his alleged involvement in a scuffle at an apartment in Vellalore and was sent to an observation home.


Coimbatore: Abu Tahir (44), a resident of an apartment in Coimbatore district's Vellalore area tried to set himself on fire at the Podanur police station. He was protesting against his 16-year-old son's arrest three days ago for his alleged involvement in a scuffle at an apartment in Vellalore and was sent to an observation home.

Abu Tahir had arrived at the Podanur police station and forced his son to leave the police station. This led to an argument with the policemen at the Podanur police station. Suddennly, Abu Tahir took petrol from the autorickshaw in which he had come and poured it on his body to set himself on fire. The policemen there including Sub-Inspectors stopped him, pacified him and then sent him home.

Meanwhile, the police have registered a case against Abu Tahir for attempting suicide by pouring petrol on the premises of the police station.
