Session on 'Biotextiles' held at Sri Ramakrishna College of Arts and Science



The department of Biochemistry  of Sri Ramakrishna College of Arts and Science today organised a session on Bio-Textiles.

The speaker for the sessions were Dr.Ketankumar Vadodarioa Head Incharge, Centre of Excellence, Medical textiles SITRA and Dr.E.Santhini Senior Scientific Officer A Grade, Centre of Excellence, Medical Textiles SITRA.



Dr.Ketankumar Vadodaria in his guest lecture educated the students regarding the field of medical textiles and the career opportunities.He shared that there are various types of like technical textiles like Agro textiles, Geo textiles and that nearly 13 varieties of textiles are in use. 

Agro based textiles (green shade covers) are used in agricultural fields to reduce the atmospheric effects and control the production of crops. In the field of medicine, textiles are used in various forms like fibre,yarn,fabric and garment for various purposes like sutures,surgical gowns,band aids wound dressings, hospitals linens etc., 

At present, nearly 60% of the medical textiles is being imported from abroad this shows lack of awareness regarding career opportunities in medical textile field.Though demonetization has affected the field but slowly the industry is bouncing back with a lot of scope. He advised the students should take up the careers in this field and also requested them them to visit SITRA and do viable projects in the field.

Dr.E.Shantini Sr.Scientific Officer A Grade Centre of Excellence - Medical textiles SITRA took a session for students on the role of textiles in wound care.The session was attended by Head of Biochemistry Department, Mrs.Chitra along with staffs and students of the department.
