Jayalalithaa announces Amma drinking water scheme

Chief minister J Jayalalithaa on Saturday announced Amma drinking water scheme (Amma Kudineer Thittam) to offer treated water from reverse osmosis purifiers free of cost to economically weaker sections. Each family will get 20 litres a day.

"Initially, the purification units would be installed in 100 identified habitations of the economically weaker sections in Greater Chennai Corporation," Jayalalithaa said in a statement.

In Chennai, most middle and higher income families use treated water that comes from RO purifiers or buy packaged drinking water from private players, despite Metrowater, the government agency supplying 830 million litres a day.

The chief minister said it was the desire of the poor people to get purified water. "To fulfill their aspirations, I have ordered the implementation of a new scheme, Amma Kudineer Thittam," she said. The purification plants will have the capacity to treat 2,000 litres an hour and the capacity would be increased further on need basis.

The quality of water supplied by these plants will be ensured through water testing laboratories. "Under this scheme, smart cards will be given to the families to get water from these plants," she said. In the last 56 months of the AIADMK regime, the government has implemented 41 combined water supply schemes worth Rs 7,324.34 crore, and another 69 schemes worth Rs 6,602.78 in progress.

Work is also under various stages of implementation in 69 panchayat habitations and 30 town panchayats, where drinking water is deficit.
