Rs 1,000 per month to girl students - The number of girls benefitting this year has increased as compared to last year

Last year, 71,008 girls were benefitted under the 'Pudhumai Pen' Scheme, which provides Rs.1,000 per month to girl students who have studied in government schools and enrolled in higher education. During the current year, 91,485 girls have been benefitted. Accordingly, more than 20,000 girl students have been benefitted in the current year as compared to last year.


Chennai: The number of girls benefiting from the 'Pudhumai Penn' scheme, which provides Rs 1,000 per month to girl students, has increased by more than 20,000 in the current year as compared to last year, the Tamil Nadu government has said.

During the DMK regime, the Moovalur Ramamirtham Marriage Assistance Scheme was introduced to promote the education of women from poor and needy families in Tamil Nadu.

Accordingly, at the time of the marriage, financial assistance ranging from Rs 25,000 to Rs 50,000 was provided based on the educational qualification of the bride. Subsequently, after 2011, a scheme was introduced to provide gold in the form of 4 grams and 8 grams of gold per thali with financial assistance.

With M K Stalin taking over as the Chief Minister, the Moovalur Ramamirtham Ammaiyar Ninaivu Marriage Assistance Scheme was renamed as 'Pudhumai Pen Thittam' to ensure the higher education of girls studying in government schools belonging to economically backward families in line with the present situation.

The scheme is being implemented from September 5, 2022 on the occasion of Teachers' Day.

Accordingly, a sum of Rs.1,000 per month is being provided as higher education guarantee under the Higher Education Guarantee Scheme to the girl students studying in Standards VI to XII in Government schools.

In the academic year 2021-2022, 71,008 girls were benefitted under the 'Pudhumai Penn' scheme. In the academic year 2022-2023, 91,485 girls are benefitted. Accordingly, the Government of Tamil Nadu has informed that 20,477 girls are getting benefitted under the Innovative Girl Scheme as compared to the previous year.
