Out of the total capacity of 100 feet, there was only 81 feet of water yesterday morning, but it reached 97 feet last night due to heavy rain in the catchment areas. The authorities have been advising people living along the banks of the river to move to higher areas.
Coimbatore: The water level of Pillur dam near Mettupalayam in Coimbatore district has risen sharply due to heavy rains in Avalanche, Upper Bhavani and Kundha catchments of Nilgiris district.
Out of the total capacity of 100 feet, there was only 81 feet of water yesterday morning, but it reached 97 feet last night due to heavy rain in the catchment areas. Subsequently, 14,000 cubic feet of water, which is considered the safety of the dam, was released into Bhavani river through 4 sluices. Due to this there was flood in Bhavani river.
Also, a flood warning was issued by the district administration. Due to this, the Bhavani river overflows its banks touching both banks. In this case, Mettupalayam Tahsildar Malathi, Zonal Deputy Tahsildar Balamurugan and the revenue department and the police department are jointly warning the general public about flood risk to avoid accidents.
Due to the flood in Bhavani River, the people living in the coastal areas of the river are advising the public to move to higher ground and not to go down, bathe or fish in the river.
Also, the revenue department informed that 5 private wedding halls and fire department are ready to provide safe accommodation to the people living in low lying areas.
