Coimbatore: Despite continued awareness to abolish child marriage, the practice of minor marriages is still prevalent in Coimbatore district. Reports point that domestic violence against women and child marriages have increased during the Covid lockdown across the country.
As per the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, marriage of boys younger than 21 years and girls younger than 18 years is regarded as an offence. In the month of July, two cases of child marraiges were reported to the social welfare department. And, FIRs against the offenders and arrests have been done, told District Collector, GS Sameeran.
Following complaints on minor marriages through childline number, the social welfare department have initiated action against two offenders -- Nethaji from Vellalore and Kannan from Kulathupalayam village in karumathampatty. FIRs were registered and the duo were arrested. Additionally, a CSR has been filed on another person named Pushparaj from Marudoor Village in Karamadai for involving in child marriage, said the Collector.
Public are advised to report such offences to child helpline number 1098, requested the Collector.
