Fake News Alert: There is no new Covid variant or large clusters of cases from Nanjundapuram - Coimbatore Corporation

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation on Thursday has put an end to the speculations that a new Coronavirus variant has emerged from Nanjundapuram here and several hundreds of the residents were tested positive. Refuting the claims, the Corporation has issued a stern warning against rumour mongers and warns of arrest.

In a statement released by the Corporation Commissioner M. Kumaravel Pandian, he said the office of CCMC has alerted the police officials in Coimbatore to take stern legal action against those who spread baseless information on new virus variant and create public panic.

“There is no such new variant called Nanjundapuram variant emerged in the district. There has been a fake news on this being circulated by miscreants after people there reported to have tested positive for the coronavirus. We have taken the samples of as many as 650 people in Nanjundapuram and 56 of them have turned to be positive for the corona virus in the last ten days” the Corporation commissioner clarified in a statement issued to the press.

He had also said the corporation workers are conducting door to door testing and screening in and around Nanjundapuram area, to ensure residents are free of Covid symptoms like fever, cough, diarrhea, cold and other symptoms.

The release comes after the fake news has been doing rounds among the people, especially those living in Nanjundapuram and Ramanathapuram areas, here.

Rubbishing the claims, Hospital Deans and Doctors have requested people to not panic and spread false information. However, the doctors have appealed to the public to follow all Covid protocols issued by the government to control the viral spread..

The Dean of ESI hospital in Coimbatore Dr. Raveendran also clarified that news of new variant. When asked whether the hospital has been ramping up beds supported with oxygen for children as claimed in the fake message, the dean said it is just a usual measure they take up to ramp up beds every now and then.
