Coimbatore: Elephant Pongal celebration at Kozhikamuthi elephant camp on 15th of January. Tourists and public visits banned over fear of Covid-19 pandemic spread.
Elephant Pongal is widely celebrated every year at Anamalai Tiger Reserve, Pollachi Forest Range, Valparai, Topslip and Manampalli forest ranges.
There are 28 elephants being maintained at the Kozhikamuthi Camp near Topslip.
Every year the elephants from the camp are brought to Topslip on pongal day where the area tribals make pongal and celebrate it with the elephants.
During this Elephant Pongal Ceremony, tourists from Pollachi and other districts from Tamilnadu and Kerala visit Topslip. Elephants are made to stand in line and are fed with special food and fruits during the Elephant Pongal Celebrations with the amusement from the public and tourists.
But this year owing to the Covid-19 pandemic and virus spread, Forest Department Officials say that the Elephant Pongal Celebrations are scheduled to happen at the Kozhikamuthi Camp on 15th with no permission for the public to visit.
