Coimbatore: In an important announcement, the District Collector has informed that Covid Care Centres (CCC) set up at educational institutions will be closed. Henceforth, all asymptomatic patients will be treated at CODISSIA only, the Collector said.
To treat asymptomatic Covid-19 patients, Covid Care Centres were set in multiple places especially at educational institutions. Since the inception.of CCC's, influx of cases to these centres were high, as a majority of the positive Covid cases experienced only very mild to moderate symptoms and did not warrant hospital admission.
Over 5,000 beds were available at such centres including Codissia, Siddaputhur, Annur, Thudiyalur, Karumathampatti and Kalapatti to treat asymptomatic patients. However, the CCC's which were overflowing with Covid positive cases, a month ago are now vacant, following steep fall in the infection rate in the district.
The number of daily cases which were climbing close to 700 plus a month ago, has drastically dropped below 250. Thus, the number of patients admitted at many CCC's are next to 'nil'.
In a bid to reduce unnecessary costs involved in maintaining these centres including manpower, the District Administration had planned to close down all such asymptomatic treatment centers set up in educational institutions.
And, with the State government's recent announcement to re-open schools (from 9th grade) and colleges, the CCC's set at education institutions have to be thoroughly disinfected before allowing students.
Speaking on this, District Collector K Rajamani said that "The incidence of Corona infection rate in Coimbatore district has come down to 5.3 percent. Currently, the number of patients being treated in hospitals and Corona treatment centers is less than 2,000. Of these, only 500 are being treated at corona treatment centers."
At the 1128 bedded facility in Codissia, only 234 asymptomatic patients are being treated here. And, the remaining 894 beds are vacant. Hence, we have decided to close down Covid care centres set up in educational institutions. So, henceforth all asymptomatic patients will be treated at CODISSIA only, the Collector said.
The Corona treatment center set up exclusively for women in Kalapatti will also be closed, he added. If required, the centres will be re-opened in the coming days, the Collector noted.
