The move comes in wake of a Supreme Court order that directed governments to meet the food needs of the sex workers, who were also hit during the COVID pandemic.
Following this, the TN government decided to provide essentials to those involved in the sex trade in Tamil Nadu. There are 84, 718 sex workers in Tamil Nadu. Of these, 74,054 have ration cards with them. Therefore, the Tamil Nadu State AIDS Control Society has announced that special camps will be held in all districts to identify 10,664 people without family cards and later issue them the cards.
The issuance of family cards will begin soon and will be done in collaboration with the District Social Welfare Offices, Civil Supplies Corporation and the respective District Administrations.
