As farmers are not keen to sell the goats at the Kannivadi goat market, the arrival of goats has come down for the last three weeks. According to traders, the price of goats has gone up by up to Rs 100 per kg over last week and was sold at Rs 750.
Tirupur: Prices have gone up by up to Rs 100 per kg in kannivadi goat market next to Dharapuram due to low arrivals, traders said.
Kannivadi Goat Market is one of the largest goat markets in Tamil Nadu. The market is held on Fridays every week.
Apart from the big cities of Tamil Nadu like Coimbatore, Pollachi, Udumalpet, Madurai, Trichy and Chennai, traders from neighbouring states like Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh come to kannivadi goat market to buy goats.
Similarly, farmers from Kannivadi and Mulanoor, Vellakoil, Paramathi and surrounding villages bring their goats for sale.
Farmers do not come forward to sell their goats as there is good fodder for the goats in the area. Therefore, the arrival of goats to the Kannivadi goat market has come down for the last three weeks, leading to a rise in prices.
There is enough water in the wells in Kannivadi and surrounding areas. Moreover, farmers are showing more interest in rearing goats as there is enough food for the cattle. As a result, the arrival of goats to kannivadi goat market has come down as farmers are not interested in selling the goats.
The price of the goats in this market depends on its weight. Accordingly, it was sold at Rs 650 per kg last week, an increase of Rs 100 this week to Rs 750 per kg.
Based on that, a goat weighing 10 kg was sold for around Rs 7,500. Only over 6,000 goats were brought for sale this week.
