College officials are skeptical on how they can prepare supplementary students in a few weeks for first semester exams due in December, with first-year regular students having already completed their first internals and second internals being due in November 18.
Even as admissions are underway for Class 12 students who completed their supplementary exams successfully, the Government Arts College in the city had extended the date for admission to regular courses. Both students and the college are now feeling the heat since semester exams for first-year students are set to begin in December, while internal exams for the same has already been completed.
Admissions have been extended till November 18 in line with the Tamil Nadu Government directive to the Higher Education Department in the State.
College officials are skeptical on how they can prepare supplementary students in a few weeks for first semester exams that are due to begin in December."First-year regular students have completed their first internals, and the second internals are on November 18. Exams will begin in the first week of December. It will be challenging both for the management, staff and students to be able to prepare for the exams after admissions have been granted now. We have asked the Government to let these students write their semester exams in their even semesters and we are awaiting a response from the Government," said Veeramani, State President of Tamil Nadu Government College Teachers Association.
It is to be noted that the Higher Education Department has extended the admission dates after the review meeting on November 11 with the Higher Education Minister, K Ponmudy. At the review meeting, the go-ahead was given to all the Arts and Science Colleges in the State to fill in the vacant courses for 2022-2023. While the Higher Education Department extended the dates for admission, the Government Arts college in Coimbatore registered 1,619 seats. Veeramani added, "The standard strength of our college is 1,479 for the first year. However, with the 20 percent student hike due to the Government notification, we have admitted 140 students in vacant courses."
